CSX Hilo Shifter - 3-19-2010

Rail Fan Adventure --
1. A check of the approach-lit signals at the North End of Pineville revealed nothing.  View is looking south with the passing siding and Wallsend Yard on the left.  A string of ICXX hoppers were stored in the yard. View 1.

3. Nally & Hamilton Enterprises' Balkan loadout at Tejay, Ky., on the Cumberland Valley Sub.  This was formerly known as Whipple.  Nally & Hamilton acquired the property and reopened it in 2006 as a 4-hour, 110-car batch-weigh tipple.  I heard a train on the scanner that was loading here earlier in the day. View 1.

5. Heading east on US 119, I heard a train leaving Loyall Yard.  I set up at Wilhoit, the end of a controlled siding that extends north from the yard.

6. Soon CSX 170-4569 barreled by.  Unfortunately they didn't have a train!  The dispatcher said they would meet one train, but otherwise they would have a clear shot to Corbin.  Evidently CSX needed the engines and crew back in Corbin.

7. Looking south toward Loyall and Harlan.  The CV used to have a lot of double track.  Trains are often parked on the siding.  The community is called "Dayhoit."

8. The scanner revealed a shifter working up the Clover Fork Branch.  I took KY 38 out of Harlan, and found the crew working the Kentucky Cumberland Coal at High Splint.  CSX 777-14 had just loaded 30 and were bringing them down off the hill.

9. He cuts off, will switch to the main and go back north for more empties.  CSX recently removed the rest of the Clover Fork Branch to Glenbrook.

12. The former community of High Splint is now coal company property.  They have a security guard near the bridge.  The white house contains the High Splint Museum, but admission requires the guard to call a local resident to open it.  I cautiously walked across the bridge to get this shot of 14-777 shoving up the steep Seagraves Creek Branch where the mine is located.

13. In May 2000 Roy Ward, Jack Kuiphoff and I stumbled into an opportunity to shoot the Hi-Lo loadout. With a CSX plate on the front of my truck and wearing a CSX cap, the security guard thought we were with the railroad!  Hi-Lo is a 110-car, 4-hour, batch-weigh tipple.  The prep. plant obviously has some age on it. View 1.

I headed across Black Mountain on KY 179 to Cumberland and then followed US 119 home.
