B&O/CSX Short Line SD at Lumberport and Brooklyn Jct. WV

Rail Fan Adventure --

Here a few more shots of the former B&O Short Line aka Hartzel SD.

1. Lumberport depot on 05-23-1980. Looking east on the Short Line SD which is on the right. The connection to the M.R. SD is on the left. Haywood power plant is in the background. Back in the days the heavy coal traffic from Fairmont (sometimes behind EM-1s) would use the connection.

9. His caboose is still parked ahead of him. I’m not sure what move he made after this, as I departed the scene. He may have delivered the coal to the Harrison power plant on the Robinson Run Br. 05-23-1980.

17. An active underground mine portal with some degree of rail haul is on the center right. A conveyor from another mine comes down the hill on upper right. A contemporary look at Google Earth reveals that underground mining has ceased, and the coal comes from a mine at Bingamon WV, about 5 miles to the northwest. The preparation plant is still in operation. Consol 95.

20. CSX aluminum tubs 379796 and 379711 on coal train T104 (Consol 95 – Bostwick FL). This shot and Google reveals another railroad bridge behind this bridge. Prior to Consol 95 a mine named Katherine (1957) was located on the Robinson Run Branch 0.9 mi from the junction with the MR. Perhaps No. 95 required the original line to be relocated for the loop track. Consol 95.
