The 2019 Convention -
ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!
I am sorry - but the 2019 CSXTHS Conference is being canceled for the following reasons:
1) The Kentucky Coal Mine Museum is being closed for renovation;
2) The operating coal mine we were going to visit has withdrawn permission to visit;
3) You can not get to Hagan Switchback due to a road washout;
4) Loyall Yard is for all practical purposes closed;
5) CSXT is only running 3-4 trains a week over the CV;
6) Kentucky Steam Heritage locomotive, C&O 2716, is not moving to Ravenna until late July.
Once again I am sorry about this, but I see no sense in spending three days in Eastern Kentucky not being able to see coal and train operations.
C&O Historical Society says we can join them for their Cincinnati Convention July 31-August 4.
Go to C&OHS web site http://cohs.org/ and register.
On Thursday and Friday of the C&OHS Conference, CSXTHS can railfan CSXT in the Cincinnati area and on Saturday go with C&OHS to Amtrak Shop at Beech Grove. This may be the last chance to visit Beech Grove.
I will refund CSXTHS Convention money.
MAKE SURE YOU CANCEL YOUR ROOM RESERVATION AT HAZARD.
A lot of things were going on in the background on CSXT's CV Subdivision that I was unaware of that led to CSXTHS convention cancellation - The three active coal mines on the CV closed at the end of June, two in Harlan County and one in Letcher County - filed for bankruptcy - Their end of June employee paychecks bounced -- the mines may close permanently - some 500 miners and support staff laid off -- The hospital at Pineville, head of CV Subdivision, is in bankruptcy and has not paid its employees since beginning of June. - CSXT CV shut down - Major economic turmoil in Bell, Letcher, and Harlan counties - Charles Bogart
On Friday August 3 at 0900, it will be possible for 16 members of CSXTHS and C&OHS to visit Queensgate Yard during the CSXTHS and C&OHS Convention. If interested, contact Charles Bogart.
