Freight Car Cornucopia - 05-20-2025
Here are a few more cars that I shot in 2024.
1. CMFX 7047 is CMF Leasing, a railcar maintenance, repair, and leasing company based in Bucyrus KS. This former wood chip hopper hauls foundry coke from SunCoke Energy at Vansant. Coke doesn't weigh as much per volume as coal therefore, these high-capacity hoppers can be used. NS Weller Yard, VA, on 11-04-2024.
2. CMFX 7047 was built 04-1981.
3. BRAE Corp. was a management company that, after several transactions, became CMF Leasing.
4. CMFX 7079 was parked by itself below the coke plant at Dismal Yard (Vansant). That flying goose logo came from Kyle Railroad. Kyle took over much of the former Rock Island line across Kansas to Colorado. I have a shot of a Kyle GP40 leased to CSX in 1989, and the goose logo is reversed. Kyle is now a subsidiary of Genesee & Western.
5. AEX 23824 belongs to American Industrial Transport, Inc. It has a volume of 3,771 cubic feet, a load limit of 227,400 lbs., and was built by Freight Car America at Johnstown, PA, in 08-2007. FCA shut down Johnstown (fka Bethlehem Steel), Roanoke (fka NS), and Danville IL, in favor of a new plant in Mexico! Trump's tariffs may affect that decision. No. 23824 was previously GATX (General American Marks).
6. ANGX 9310 is a 202,700 lbs, 4000 cu ft car built by Bethlehem 08-1979. ANGX is The Andersons, a huge grain shipping company based in Toledo. They may be operating now as American Industrial Transport.
7. JTSX is Joseph Transportation fka David Joseph Co. They are a huge scrap dealer that is now a subsidiary of Nucor Logistics. Nucor is a huge operator of electric arc furnaces in making their steel from scrap. No. 51129 is 204,700 and was built 02-1980.
8. COGX is Rail Connection LLC. Hopper 98019 is ex-Soo Line. It has a load limit of 201,600. Soo needed hoppers after they took over the Milwaukee Road south of Terre Haute. This line serves coal operations in southern Indiana. All taken at Weller on 11-04-2024. We photographed an eastbound train of coke empties on the Kenova District Sunday, and they had a huge variety of "used" hoppers (but oddly no NS "High Tops"). Keep 'em coming!
9. UP 700949 is leaving Shelby on westbound local L200 on 12-29-2024. CSX instituted L200 and L201 to handle Kingsport's chemical and paper traffic to Russell after the flooding south of Erwin in Sept. 2024. This Domtar paper business is contained mostly in Railbox cars, but there a few almost-new UP's in there. No. 700949 has 7,500 cubic feet of volume, 205,100 load limit and was built by TrinityRail on 10-2023.
All for now.
